How To Care For Your Eyes

Your eyes are a very important part of your health and self-care. Most people rely on their eyes to see and make sense of the world around them. Some eye diseases can lead to vision loss, so it is important to find and treat any eye diseases as soon as possible. You should have your eyes checked as often as your health care provider recommends that you do, or as soon as any new vision problems come up. In the same way that it is important to keep your body healthy, you also need to keep your eyes as healthy as you can.

Eye Care Tips

There are some different things that you can do to help your eyes stay healthy and make sure that you are seeing as well as you can.

  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Your diet ought to include a lot of fruits and vegetables, especially deep yellow and green leafy vegetables. Eating fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, tuna, and halibut can also help your eyes to stay healthy.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. If you’re overweight or obese, this will increase your risk of developing Diabetes. If you have diabetes, this will put you at a higher risk of getting diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma.
  • Get regular exercise. Exercise can help you to prevent or control diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. These diseases can cause some eye or vision issues. So if you are able to exercise regularly, you can lower the risk of getting these eye and vision problems.
  • Know your other risk factors. As you get older, you are at a higher risk of developing some age-related eye diseases and conditions. It is important to know your risk factors because you might be able to lower your risk by changing some of your behaviors now or start treating them, for example with an acquired ptosis eyedrop
  • Give your eyes a rest. If you spend a lot of time looking at a computer screen, you can forget to blink your eyes enough and your eyes can get tired. To reduce eye strain from computers, try the 20-20-20 rule. With this rule, every 20 minutes, you should look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds to give your eyes a break.

Eye Tests and Exams

Everyone needs to have their eyesight tested occasionally to check for vision and eye problems. Children usually have vision screening in school or at the office of their health care provider during their regular checkups. Adults can also get vision screenings during their checkups or physicals. However, a lot of adults need more than a basic vision screening. They need a comprehensive dilated eye exam.

Getting comprehensive dilated eye exams is very important because some eye diseases may not have a lot of warning signs, giving you less time to intervene and fix the problem. The exams are the only way to detect these diseases in their early stages when they are easier to treat.

If you have a refractive error and are going to need to wear glasses or contact lenses, then you will also have to have a refraction test. When you have this test, you will look through a device that has lenses of different strengths to help your optician or optometrist to work out which lenses will give you the best vision.

The age that you should start getting these exams and how often you should have them will depend on several factors. These factors include your age, race, and overall health. For example, if you are African American, you are at higher risk of glaucoma and will need to start these exams earlier. If you have diabetes, you should have an exam every year. Check with your health care provider about if and when you need eye exams.
