Healthy Habits To Teach Your Children From A Young Age

As a parent, you arealways anxious about your child’s health. You want to ensure they live healthy, fulfilling lives with little to no illnesses and complications. This is even more prudent given the current statistics concerning the effects of poor health habits in children. For example, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) collected data concerning obesity from 2017 to 2020. It was found that about 22.2 percent of children between 12 to 19 years and 12.7 percent of children between 2 to 5 years are obese. Therefore, it is important to pass on and instill healthy habits in your children at an early age. Here are a few important ones.

  • Breakfast is the most important meal of the day

Getting your child to eat breakfast is easier said than done. The hustle and bustle of getting ready to leave home for school usually make it easy for them to skip breakfast. This is an unhealthy habit. Taking in breakfast is a great way to start the day as it provides the brain and body with energy. A nutritious breakfast provides your children with essential minerals and vitamins to promote growth and prevent diseases. By sticking to breakfast, your children also develop better-eating patterns, encouraging them to stick to meal times.

  • Pay attention

Another habit to instill in your children is the importance of good hygiene. Put them in the routine of washing their hands before and after meals as well as when they’re done spending time outside. Due to their curious nature, children are usually exposed to germs and bacteria. By getting them to wash their hands with soap, you prevent the contraction and spread of diseases. You should also encourage them to keep their bodies neat and clean by ensuring they bathe twice daily. You should also ensure they follow grooming routines such as cutting nails short and keeping their hair neat and clean.

Teach them the correct oral health practices. For instance, teach them the right way to brush and floss twice a day. You should also promote this habit by setting up regular dental visits. Dental clinics such as Smiles Family Dental Care allow for family appointments, so your entire family can plan a visit.

  • Get active

Much of a child’s entertainment comes from sitting behind a screen. Whether video games or watching shows, your child may gradually become a couch potato. Although these activities may benefit your child’s mental skills, they also need to enjoy the benefits of being outdoors. Physical activities such as sports, gardening, or engaging in innovative play outside are just a few examples. Additionally, experts have found that exercise releases hormones that help your children handle academic and emotional stress. It also helps them get better sleep and develops their cognitive skills.

Passing down your genes is not enough to ensure your children live healthier lives. By implementing these healthy habits (and more) into their lives, you ensure a healthy lifestyle for years to come.
